Senate introduces NIL proposal

Interesting - tuberville and manchin introducing new legislation to regulate ncaa sports and NIL $$.

Notable: 3 years before one can transfer. Far more regulations. Insurance requirements after graduation.

Just skimmed the article and who knows if this will move forward, but we may have regulations soon. Not a bad thing for Stanford. Wild West doesn’t help us. (Sorry if this was posted elsewhere. Didn’t see it).

What’s up at USC?

Last year their basketball center lost six months or so with heart problems. He went into cardiac arrest during an off season team workout. Recently, incoming freshman Brony James went into cardiac arrest at Galen. He had to be stabilized and rushed to the hospital.

I hope Muir has our emergency medical response programs for student athletes up to a high standard. Competing at an elite level has inherent risk.

Basketball Recruiting WBB recruiting notes: June/July

Alrighty, the women's hoops recruiting notes thread for June is here. Check out the last one which was from April here.

I'll check to see if there's any more possible momentum towards them landing someone out of the transfer portal. It's been awful quiet and they haven't landed anyone after losing Betts, Nivar, and Emma-Nnopu to the portal. I suspect there's a chance that they'll land one player. I know they're trying to do that, but I think the rest of the spots they're likely to use for 2024 kids. Admissions isn't as easy on their program as it is on football and men's basketball.

One offer that I should mention is 2026 point guard Devin Cosgriff out of Bishop O'Dowd in Oakland. She also plays for J-Kidd Select, a girls AAU program started by Jason Kidd. She was offered this spring and it was tweeted out by J-Kidd Select.

In other news regarding a commit, 2025 point guard Hailee Swain has bene seated to compete for the 2023 USA Women's Under-16 National Team, so she's pretty fired up about that. And then Stanford has a strong class coming in for 2023: Nunu Agara, Courtney Ogden, and Chloe Clardy are all really good, so they should be able to contribute right away and also get a lot of minutes out of the gates. It would be nice if they could find at least one grad transfer for this class as this team is going to be on the younger side this season. Cameron Brink of course will have to really lead the charge along with Hannah Jump who will be back for a fifth year.

And then speaking of Brink, she got a gold medal at the FIBA 3x3 World Cup for Team USA over the weekend, so that's something that should be mentioned as well. Though it's of course not recruiting related.

Once again, I hope to find out more about possible transfer targets, but latest I heard, they were having some trouble finding players who could get admitted.

Unbelievable mile in Monaco

Crazy fast world record. The old record by the Netherlands' Hassan was 4:12.
Stanford alum Elise Cranny broke Mary Slaney's ancient American record. Unfortunately, she was the second American in the race.

OT: Kris Weems

According to reports, including from Monte Poole, the Warriors are promoting Kris Weems from a player-development position to front-bench assistant alongside Steve Kerr. Weems will be replacing Jama Mahlalela, who left for the Raptors.

Congrats Kris, well deserved!!!

Football Pac-12 Media Day Hub

Pac-12 Media Day is today. Just firing this up now. Stanford goes on the main stage at 9:55 AM PT. Troy Taylor at 9:55 and then John Humphreys and Tristan Sinclair will get on at 10:20 AM. Pac-12 Networks will air it.

I’ll add a video of that in here once it gets posted on YouTube and I’ll also re-link relevant content items in here as well as other notes and thoughts that I have. As I have mentioned, I’m in Utah for the Deseret News Marathon that is happening on Monday, but I’m now settled in and should be able to follow along with the action from Las Vegas.

Baseball MLB Draft Hub

The MLB Draft starts later today at 7:00 PM ET/4:00 PM PT. Details of how to watch are here. Tommy Troy is expected to be the first Stanford player selected. This draft is big for Stanford. Gonna be interesting to see who gets picked and where they go. I'd expect anyone drafted in the first ten rounds to leave, anyone drafted after that will have something to think about. Especially as things get later and later.

Football Steve Young to coach under John Paye at Menlo School

Steve Young’s new job is working as an assistant girls flag football coach at Menlo School. John Paye is the head coach. Pretty cool.

Football Recruiting West Spotlight: Superlatives for the region's top WRs

Adam Gorney shares his thoughts on 2024 4-star WR Kwazi Gilmer here. I don't see Gilmer coming to Stanford as UCLA appears to be the heavy favorite, but still worth dropping this in here since he is still undecided and Stanford made his top six.
