Football Roster Updated with Number Changes

Personnel-wise, at least:
  • All transfers and frosh are now on the roster. The transfers were "announced as signed" today.
  • Academic class years have been updated. Not sure what differentiates "Fifth Year" from "Graduate Student" but oh well. Interestingly, the transfers who redshirted are properly noted as such while our homegrown players are not.
  • All coaches now have their correct titles.
  • As mentioned by Ben, Allen Thomason is no longer on the roster - he's the only one AFAICT.
  • Certain changed positions have not been updated, and weights obviously haven't as well. That should be in August at the end of camp.

Football Recruiting Stanford Football recruiting notes: June

Welcome to the Stanford football recruiting notes thread for June. Official visits are in full swing this weekend with more to come later in the month. So we're starting this thread in the middle of a busy time! If you missed anything from the May recruiting thread, click here to check that out. It looks like at least a couple of guys have already committed from the visit and possibly more to follow. Hopefully more than two!

To check out the list of visitors, click here. As a reminder, feel free to check the box that shows unofficial visits to get an even clearer picture of the visits, but the visits happening this weekend are of the official visit variety. As I am made aware of visitors, I add them to the list. And then for offers/commits list, click here to check that out in case you want to catch a refresher on that.

Three four stars are visiting this weekend: quarterback Luke Fahey, running back Rylan Morris (Baylor commit), and offensive tackle John Turntine III. A tweet from Malcolm Agnew suggests they landed a running back and Morris is the only running back I have listed as visiting this weekend, so that ups the odds it's him. Fahey I caught up with earlier in the week and published the article. So make sure to read that in case you haven't already done so (click on his profile and you'll see the article linked to it). I got a Future Cast in for Fahey and continue to feel good about it. I need to get more of a feel for Turntine, but the fact that he is visiting is obviously encouraging though I should note, there are multiple FutureCasts in, a couple of them recent, for Texas. So, the Longhorns do seem to be the front runners for him right now.

That's all I got right now. I'll do my best to reach out to as many recruits as possible about the weekend and get a feel from guys. Obviously more visits coming next weekend and then the weekend of the 20th. So, those are the two weekends they have set up right now. Nobody visiting over finals week, which makes sense.

I will add this: Andrew Luck is very much involved in the recruiting side and from all the recruits I've been talking to, that is something that they are really enjoying. At the end of the day, Luck's most important job I think is the recruiting. I think that more than anything is why he was brought in. Having him as the face of the program adds credibility and sends a message that Stanford is in it to win it. That's something that I think was a major question mark from recruits in the past. Just how committed is Stanford? By having Luck as their GM and involved on the ground, I think it's clear to recruits that Stanford is serious about winning and that's something that matters a lot to them.

What Does Being Back Look Like?

I'm curious what this group needs to see to consider Stanford Football "Back".

Clearly there is a long ways to go. A winning season would be a start. Getting to a Bowl game. Landing a 5-star recruit. Being ranked in the top 25. 8+ wins in a season, etc.

Personally, I need to see a 10-win season to declare that Stanford Football is fully back. Shooting too high, or not high enough?

Football Strength and Conditioning

S&C was a calling card of Stanford Football during the Golden Era. Turley had a program that emphasized functional strength, resulting in peak performance on the field and extremely low injury rates.

Things haven't been as strong in this department in recent years. Stewart Mandel detailed how Turleys intensive "Taking the Rope" drill was shut down by administrators and Shaw in 2017, on of many signs that Stanfords identity of toughness was deteriorating. Turley of course was gone a year later, for a behavioral incident which some here may know varying levels of detail about.

I stumbled upon a video of BYU's strength and conditioning work this offseason. It looks very intense:

Right now the strength coach is Ryan Deatrick, in his second season from Sac State, a TT hire obviously. His experience is below, hopefully he is building a monster with this team, because we have looked physically overmatched many times on the field in recent years.

Katie Meyer

I just watched ESPN’s The Katie Meyer Story,
A real bummer. I love Stanford, my dad was a law student and I spent my first year and a half at Escondido Village. Attended my first football game as a child in 1969. I was hooked. Did not attend Stanford (SJSU) but my allegiance has always been Stanford. I was a Stanford employee from 1998 to 2013, many departments including working for Gerhard Casper in the President’s Office to the Stanford Athletics Marketing Department. I was living my dream. However Stanford is a bureaucracy and not always rosy. Shit does happen and a-holes are assigned positions of power. I indeed came across some absolute dickheads in the AD as well as the office of development. Stanford does (in my experience) err on the side of those with seniority over the rank and file. Katie Meyer did not have representation, she was young and impressionable and felt the weight of the Stanford bureaucracy closing in and felt as though everything she worked for was over. My issues with Stanford OOD occurred when I was in my forty’s and I was not impressionable. I left OOD after fighting the power for months. Less than a year after I left, the manager I had issues with was dismissed for abusing her subordinates which was my issue with her. Stanford is not immune from missteps. Many an influential a-hole has a Stanford degree.
