In an alternate universe what might have happened in the pac12

In the spring of 2023, before the Pac-12 collapsed, commissioner George Kliavkoff was presented with a backup option in the event Oregon and Washington left for the Big Ten and the Four Corners schools bolted to the Big 12.

The specifics, according to an industry source:

Invite the top football schools from the Mountain West, pair them with WSU and OSU, then convince Cal and Stanford to stay put.

By remaining in the Pac-12, the Bears and Cardinal would have had a vastly easier path into the College Football Playoff than in the ACC (or anywhere else).

Basketball Roy Yuan rec league story

I play in a rec league in Menlo Park. Have had a team now for roughly 6 years. A few of us older guys in our 40s mixed with some young talent to keep us competitive.

We have a young big man on the team who works at the Stanford gym. We only have 6 so about 30 minutes before tipoff he calls me and asks if he can bring “a point guard”

I always like to have 7 guys so I say “sure.”

He shows up with Roy Yuan, who ends up scoring half our points (shooting over the top of a 2-3 zone) as we pulled away for an easy win.

I asked Roy about Stanford hoops. He said the new coach has a great track record. Also that last season they had a talented team and he really enjoyed his time there.

He’s currently job hunting, looking for ML engineering roles. Hopefully he’ll play with us again. Super nice, mellow guy who is a legit hooper.

Women's Volleyball Choices, Choices

Ben,

You certainly are an industrious and good monitor. You put out a ton of information, I realize this primarily is a football and basketball site. but do we really have to read so much about some high school junior who liked a trip to California but never will actually play at Stanford and really get to read so little about women's volleyball, a sport where the crowds are growing not shrinking, where Stanford is #2 and not #200. where the early autumn contests are significant, not trivial for NCAA playoff rankings. GoStanford actually does better.

P12 >>> P2 >>> P6 >>> P8???

Very interesting news that the Pac12 has added Boise State, Colorado State, San Diego State, and Fresno State, to boost numbers to 6 teams. One has to imagine that there is another move coming, as the conference needs to get up to 8 teams to survive, and it is unlikely these 4 would have abandoned the MWC if there was not a plan to get the Pac12 up to at least 8 teams.

This seems like a really good move for the Pac12, OSU and WSU. They get to take some of the best programs in the MWC (and some of the better TV markets) and get to leave behind some of the programs that drag down quality and ratings. Very curious to see what the next move might be for the conference. UNLV would see a good fit for TV market purposes. Perhaps Air Force. Maybe they decide to ignore geography and grab UConn.

Perhaps this ends up as a landing spot for Stanford, Cal, and SMU if the ACC goes belly up and the BIG continues to decline Stanford and Cal... I know that Stanford and Cal probably could have worked with OSU and WSU to build this exact conference last year, instead of leaving for the ACC, but the ACC was obviously more prestigious and more relevant. But if the ACC is not there one day, and if the BIG is not an option, then this might ultimately be Stanford's home.
