A tale of two 4th-down calls

I don't think I'd seen a coach go for it inside their own 30 in the 3rd quarter. Everyone in the dome (Syracuse defenders and TV commentators included) surely thought it would be little more than an offsides-draw attempt. I liked it for a few reasons. The odds are clearly in Stanford's favor to get a yard in two tries, especially against Syracuse. I thought it was smart not to substitute anybody after the 3rd-down play; kept Stanford in control of the clock and Syracuse on their heels a bit. Obviously risky, but I think coach also had Stanford's defense on his side. I liked this decision much more than Taylor's desperate and dumb 4th-and-10 call against TCU.

A day later, Cal was in a 4th-and-3 situation on FSU's 40, I think it was. It was late in the game, but I can't remember exactly if it was the 4th quarter yet and how much time was left. Wilcox seemed uncertain after 3rd down and called for a substitution, allowing FSU to sub in their own guys, who took their sweet time. Cal's offense panicked and a TO was called. Cal punted out of the TO, ball went into the end zone, and FSU had it on their own 20. Ouch. Who other than Shaw doesn't go for that there and then? Though 3rd and 3 is different than 3rd and 1, I'd still want my coach to put one group in for potentially both downs.

Young Men's Golf Team tied for 6th at Olympia Fields in first start

Stanford's very young men's golf team, with 3 freshmen, a sophomore and junior transfer in the lineup, ties for 6th in its first start at famed Olympia Fields GC. Freshman Jay Leng tied for 14th with 69-67-73. The field was very strong so this start was an encouraging one. The nation's #1 recruit, TK Chantananuwat, from Thailand had a third round 68 and tied for 44th. Stanford's recruiting class was ranked #1 in the country. See full details at stanfordmensgolf.com.

Observation About Coach Taylor

I have commented before that there have been times that Coach Taylor hasn’t worn a shirt/top with a Stanford logo. He almost always wears a Stanford hat, but not necessarily a top with Stanford or the block S on it. Last night’s game is a perfect example. He wore a plain black Nike long sleeve shirt with no Stanford name or logo that I could see. I don’t think I have ever seen another college head coach not wear a shirt/top without their school’s name/logo at a practice or press conference, let alone at a game. I’m not complaining or criticizing, just pointing out something that seems pretty unusual to me.

QB depth chart

With Brown out 4-6 weeks, what does our QB depth chart look like? Daniels runs a lot and takes a lot hits so the chance of him getting injured is not trivial. Does Lamson become our every down QB or is he still situational? Who is next man up on the depth chart walk-on Mirer or Myles Jackson? Mirer does seem to get about as much mention as Jackson.

Latest on the ACC

The biggest takeaway here is that teams with a large number of TV viewers expect to be paid what the market says their value is.

That means there is no landing space for Stanford that will overpay them. Those of you who pine for the B1G are delusional.

Let's accept reality and move on.
