I enjoyed hearing from Taylor and liked much of what he said but the moderator was downright awful. Generic after generic question. They asked STH to send in questions and I happen to have seen a number of good questions about philosophy, scheme, ideal characteristics of QB, etc but we got ONE f***ing question at the end about what could fans do to support the team; truly a depressing end to what could have been, but wasn't, a positive experience for STH. I know there is a Coaches swing coming up in Orange County in May; I hope there is some useful information shared there and that someone can post it here but pretty sure this is the last Stanford sponsored Zoom call that I will waste my time on.

Johnson, the Utah women hoopster, just a bit ago. Rarely do you see good D1 hoopsters - indeed very good scorers - so blatantly gag from the FT line as those two did.
Timme was bailed out by his Zag teammates; but alas, Johnson (a 75% FT shooter) was not so fortunate.

Hard not to feel badly for her (especially if you were rooting for P12 over SEC). That one is going to haunt her for a long time.

In all events, a good reminder that these are essentially kids trying their hardest; and yes, they are subject to nerves and succumbing to the pressure, just like "regular" folks are.

Isa Silva's entry recently posted and discussed here... but TOS just reported a major portal entry by 6-5 USC guard Reese Dixon-Waters, who earned Pac12's 6th man of the year. We reportedly offered him out of HS, but he selected USC and enrolled early.
Wonder if he still has the grades and if our earlier offer now re-opened?

Peeling back the layers of "Stanford Hates Fun".

It has been discussed plenty here previously in terms of Stanford’s hiring of Coach Taylor versus a “bigger name.” Of course, I am hopeful that Coach Taylor can turn things around, but I remain disappointed that Stanford did not make what most would view as a “home run hire.” ESPN has an article today on Deion Sanders and what he means to Colorado. We’ve covered a lot about his hire already, but this article certainly highlights what I dreamed about in terms of someone making a huge splash as Stanford’s new coach and how that could translate into an immediate invigoration of positivity and sense of relevancy in college football again. Clearly, Stanford is not Colorado, so things would not have changed so quickly at Stanford as they have in so many ways already at CU, regardless of who we hired. But does anyone thing that ticket sales or merchandising sales will go up significantly this season before we start winning? I envision continued paltry attendance at home games until winning and buzz about Stanford football becomes a reality. And even if we accept that getting a coach with huge buzz and name recognition is not vital, I’m still disappointed and frustrated that Stanford can’t seem to find a way to try and create buzz and enthusiasm. Take last night’s “Meet and Greet With Coach Taylor” zoom event for STH’s. It couldn’t have been more bland. They didn’t even put Coach Taylor in a place with some pizzazz that showed off Stanford’s football heritage or the campus. Rather he was in some office with his background muted. At one point the lights in the room went off and he had to wave his arms to get the lights to activate the motion detector to turn the lights back on. It was a metaphor for how boring this event really was. Anyway, I’m attaching a link to the article for your information. I’m just depressed because while I’m sure Coach Taylor is a great guy and a great football coach, I still feel that if Stanford was really intent on being great in football again, things would have ended up differently.

A couple of weeks back, I was able to attend an event with Steve Young as the main speaker in Menlo Park. He was talking about his book The Law of Love. The organization he was speaking at is called "The Hearth" which is an organization that supports the LGBTQ+ community. A link to their website and a description of Steve's presentation is here.

Anyways, Steve shared a story about Reggie White that I thought some of you would like to hear. He said that he and Reggie were very close given that they both came into the NFL at the same time and that his dad helped Reggie find an agent and all. He talked about how when you first get into the NFL you fill out some information that will go on your card for the rest of your career. So if any of you have a Steve Young trading card, that information is the same no matter what year it is because that information comes from the info that Young filled out as a rookie. He said he was listed at 6'2", 215 pounds and Reggie was listed at like 6'5" and 300 pounds (I looked it up, it was 6'5", 291).

Young then said that while many people consider Lawrence Taylor to be the greatest defensive player of all-time, he thinks it was Reggie White. Just because Reggie had such incredible mobility and was as big as he was. He said every time he faced off against Reggie, he would hear Reggie coming. Reggie would be yelling, screaming, and coming at him with reckless abandon. And every time Reggie sacked him, Reggie would roll Steve onto his stomach face up and have a conversation with him. "How's your family? How are you doing?" etc.

Steve joked that he would say "Not too good Reggie." And then as the game went on, Reggie would continue the conversation "We should grab dinner some time," etc. He felt like Reggie was the perfect example of being able to play with a great competitive spirit and fire but still able to have a loving attitude towards everyone that he came into contact with.

But anyways, I thought that was a fun story and worth passing onto you all since Young lives in the area and is such an NFL icon. I always knew Reggie White was a beast, but hearing Young say he was the greatest defensive player of all-time I think really says something.

P.S. Steve will be speaking again in the future for The Hearth. Probably sometime next year. So, if anyone wants to be sent info on that when that happens, feel free to let me know and I'll send you the details.
