Juliette Whittaker wins NCAA indoor 800.

The announcers are idiots. I think that is Dwight Stones. Stones disses Whittaker as irrelevant before the race and then after the race credits Rose with the race with some twisted logic. Whittaker was second last year. To our own Roisin Willis who didn't make the final. They should have known.

Maybe Juliette and the Stanford coaches will go back to the 800 instead of this idea of switching to the 1500.

2024 recruiting class event tonight

I haven't gone to the signing day event for several years but enjoyed this year's event before the hoops game. some observations. Sorry for the die hard recruitniks; I don't have a lot of substance on what was said about the commits...more general info and 'vibe' and 'energy' stuff.

  • Was able to talk to Bobby April and Paul Williams for about 10-15 min each, with part of that being both at the same time. Both are great with good energy and easy to talk with. Coach April seems to be running a lot of thoughts in the background; a good intensity.
  • Everyone is very excited to have 6 guys from the 2024 class on campus already. They're particularly excited on the defense to have one guy from each group (or level) in early...implied that was an ideal/purposeful scenario.
    • talked quite a bit about how hard this is to pull off at Stanford, even though it's now 'permitted', still requires tremendous commitment/effort on the student's part to get the requisite AP courses etc knocked out by Fall Sr year. I got the sense that they are pleasantly surprised and/or proud to have 6 this year. Not sure if that's a signal we should not expect this level every year?
  • seem very pleased with the strength and conditioning progress this offseason. the weight room was redesigned without an increase in the footprint per se but with a better use of space. The number I was cited was that they went from being able to have a max of 50 guys lifting at one time to having the whole team now able to lift in same session.
  • I was told that there has been a team collective loss of 400 lbs of fat and gain of 400 lbs of muscle so far. The implication was that the total 800 lb swing was the most he's seen on a roster at this point in an offseason
  • I made a comment that recruiting to Wake Forest must have presented some academic challenges but was left with the impression it's not really the same level
  • Andrew Luck did the intro; Taylor then kicked it off and turned it over to each position coach to talk through their group of commits.
  • Some notables in attendance that I saw (I'm surely missing some): Elway, Gaffney, Chris Lewis, Rodney Gilmore, Willingham
  • A GREAT quote from Andrew to open; I am paraphrasing here but it was very close to this: "tonight I was looking forward to being the big dog in a room full of alphas, but then John had to surprise us and show up and remind me that I never won a superbowl....or played in one....or won a rose bowl....or won a heisman..." Andrew was promoting a Lifetime Cardinal event at The Patio after the hoops game.
  • I liked Troy Taylor's open. I'm not a press conference watcher, but I've seen a lot of comments on here that implies he's not too talkative or engaging. I would not call him verbose after tonight; but he was comfortable, natural, and I think he did an appropriate amount of rah rah warming folks up before turning it over to the position coaches. He seems like he's fitting in to me.
  • The narrative around the players covered everything you'd expect about their FB achievements. Some things I noted:
    • there were many comments from many of the coaches about their guys' competitive edge, grit etc
    • even more focus on their leadership. it was said many times that nearly all of our guys were team captains (sidenote: I would assume that is usually the case in HS for P5 level commits? but they were acting like that is notable)
    • a lot of focus on the speedy commits (i.e a lot of track stats were cited)
    • a lot of comments about multi-sport athletes. our coaches seem to like guys who played hoops, ran track, baseball etc.
    • a lot of comments about academic achievement and character
That's all I can recall at the moment...will circle back if more comes to mind.

Matt Scott is ranked number 12 in Baseball America's top 100 college prospects for all positions for the 2025 draft. At this point, he is the only one on Stanford's roster that earned the distinction of being in the top 100. Given the excellent pitching we've seen so far, it wouldn't be surprising if he was not the only Stanford pitcher among the top 100 by the end of the season.
