Football Alternate Taylor View

I'll preface by saying that I am no fan of Taylor and I want him gone yesterday

HOWEVER

If they were to let him go this week, you could argue he never had much of a chance to succeed at Stanford. Some of it is his own doing by being a jerk, but a lot of it is circumstantial.

After two years of playing with freshmen on the field, he finally has double digit mid year transfers that are ready to contribute right away, not to mention a couple QB's that he is excited about vs. the limited Daniels

All this to say, it would be tragic for him personally to be let go right when he is finally getting the things he's been asking for since 2022. I could see him pleading behind the scenes to have the opportunity to show what he can do as a coach in a "do or die" year in 2025

I don't personally view Taylor as a sympathetic figure if he gets let go, but one could make a pretty strong argument

Contests Stanford won today

WWP remained unbeaten with dominant wins over #7 Harvard and SJST. Most likely team to keep the NCAA championship streak alive. In the next 2 weeks we play #2 USC, #3 UCLA and #5 Cal.
Arianna Cao won women's foil at the NCAA championships.
WSOFT swept Notre Dame this weekend. 23-3. Ranked 17 going into the weekend. Only team to beat Texas which is ranked #2.

Letter to Stanford

Mr Wolf

I am incredibly disappointed to see another instance of Stanford allowing itself to look either unethical or incompetent, or both, this time over the behavior of our football coach and Stanford's decision to retain him. Now that the actual reports commissioned by Stanford are circulating on the internet and quoted in the press, it boggles the mind that this individual has been allowed to stay at Stanford in such a high profile position. He should have been removed from the job long ago, long before this became public knowledge.

Knowing Stanford, it has been determined that it would cost too much to fire him, whether due to the buyout clause or the following litigation. Apparently, Stanford's good name is worth less than a coach's contract. The fact he even has such a contract, extended by our lame duck athletic director, also is beyond belief.

The MTL scandal, the determination to hold onto legacy as an advantage for admission to the university, and now this behavior from the highest paid employee at the university, all show the world that there is a lack of leadership and an obliviousness to public perception among Stanford administrators. This is quite painful to see for me and my classmates from Stanford.

Andrew Luck holds court

It looks like Andrew Luck took the opportunity of having Niners reporters at Stanford Pro Day, to invite them into a roundtable discussion to start the process of promoting Stanford Football. This was recorded and posted by Brad Graham who runs the SFNiners channel. it's the most impressive thing I have seen him anyone do to promote Stanford Football in my memory.

Lauren Betts Article Mentions Rough Experience with Tara

https://www.si.com/college-basketba...tball-joy-again-at-ucla?utm_source=reddit.com

Close keeps a shovel and a broom in her office. The shovel reminds her to dig below the surface. The broom reminds her that leading is not about being above the players; it is about serving them. When Betts arrived in Westwood in 2023, she looked at Close like the coach might pick up the broom and ride it.

“I could tell in her eyes that when I would speak, I was a trigger,” Close says. “Honestly, it hurt my feelings a little bit, because I thought it was maybe a reflection of our relationship. But what I realized is: When I was talking, she was looking at me, but she was hearing me as Tara.”

Tara VanDerveer is one of the most successful basketball coaches of all time. She led Stanford to three national championships and the 1996 U.S. Olympic team to a gold medal. Playing for her was Betts’s dream until she did it. A month into her Stanford career, Betts flew to see her family at one of her sister Sienna’s basketball tournaments in Southern California, got off the plane, and bawled. From there, things got worse.

“She clearly seemed to think that people there didn’t believe in her at all,” Michelle says. “And not only that, she seemed to think they didn’t really care about her at all.”

There were exceptions. Just not enough of them. Betts says, “When your confidence is stripped away from you, it completely changes the way you play.” Freshmen usually need time to adjust to college, and Betts felt burdened by expectations before she got there, so blaming her unhappiness entirely on Stanford is reductive. But the way Stanford responded is mystifying.

Michelle says VanDerveer has not spoken to her since October 2021, when Betts was still in high school. Lauren’s father, Andy, says he spoke to VanDerveer once during Lauren’s lone Cardinal season, when he requested a meeting. Meanwhile, Stanford coaches kept recruiting Sienna: They sat in the front row at her tournaments, hoping to impress the kid, while Michelle watched them from across the gym and seethed. By December, Michelle was telling Lauren, “You’re gonna hold on tight, and you’re gonna get through the year and you’re gonna get the hell out of here.”

What happened?

A bit of levity—Luck on Rivera

With all of the crap around Taylor, and the disappointing WBB season, I thought that some might appreciate a lighter note.

Luck was quoted on the East Bay Times/Mercury News story about Ron Rivera becoming Cal’s football GM (good hire, IMO):

Andrew Luck is four months into his GM job at rival Stanford, and he said Wednesday he’s already been in touch with Rivera. “Yeah, Ron and I have had some phone calls. I have a lot of respect for Ron,” Luck said, before wryly adding, “I have nothing good to say about Cal, nor will I ever, besides my cousin Claudia lives in Berkeley and I love her, and the food scene is OK.”
