TV rights

Could be missing something here. Please straighten me out if I am off track.

TV rights depend upon eyeballs.

So, if you are UCLA, you will get fewer viewers when you play, say, Purdue, than when you play Cal. In other words it seems to me that going to the Big10/14/16/18 decreases the value of their tv rights. Why would you do that? Is it because the Big10/14/16/18 is too stupid to understand this?

Bobby April's likely 3-4 defense & comps

We won't know a ton until a new roster comes out and/or spring practices start, but I wanted to take a stab at how we look in Bobby April's 3-4 defense (confirmed by Taylor recently in press conference). Wisconsin ran the same scheme under Jim Leonhard, and it was an open secret that had they promoted Leonhard to HC it would've been Bobby April at DC.

Here are player comps from Wisconsin's last defense to our likely starters in 2023:

PositionWisconsin 2022Stanford 2023 ('22 weights)
DERodas Johnson - 6'2" 293Anthony Franklin - 6'3" 267
NTKeeanu Benton - 6'4" 315Tobin Phillips - 6'4" 295
DEIsaiah Mullens - 6'4" 303Jaxson Moi - 6'2" 282
OLBNick Herbig - 6'2" 228David Bailey - 6'3" 238
ILBMaema Njongmeta - 6'0" 229Gaethan Bernadel - 6'1" 225
ILBJordan Turner - 6'1" 225Tristan Sinclair - 6'1" 221
OLBCJ Goetz/Darryl Peterson - 6'3" 243/6'1" 244Ernest Cooper/Lance Keneley - 6'4" 245/6'4" 252
"Tweener" who doesn't fit the systemTJ Bollers (remember TJ Bollers??) - 6'2" 251Aaron Armitage - 6'5" 260

A very simple takeaway: the LBs are fine, but every single player on our DL needs to gain 15+ pounds...and I'm sure Kolodziej knows it. That is priority #1, 2, 3, and 4. A 3-4 defense works best with a rotation of big-ass dudes on the line. We don't have them (which is why we switched to a 4-3 about 4 years too late).

I predict we'll see higher volume of DL recruited starting now (look at 2024 already), but with that may come a larger proportion of not-as-highly ranked guys. This is what Wisconsin has been doing for years and years.

Football Recruiting Key Quotes: Gibson Pyle

Hey guys, I just caught up with 2024 3-star offensive tackle Gibson Pyle, who visited last month for the junior day. I've had a Future Cast in for Stanford since early November. No inside info, just purely gut feel was the reason I put in the FutureCast. My interview with him helped me feel for comfortable about my decision to put one in for him. He definitely seems interested in Stanford even after the coaching change. Below are key quotes. The rest will be saved for the article.

"My junior day visit to Stanford was amazing! Had such a good time being able to meet Coach Taylor and Coach Adams and spend the day with them. Some of the highlights were getting to spend time with the players after the junior day and getting to sit in on some film with Coach Adams."

"They really loved my nastiness and athleticism. Yessir, they like the way I finish my blocks and continue to drive even if the ball is going the either way. They see me playing anywhere on the line, he believes I could play any position on the line if he wanted me to."

"I like their computer science program a ton. It’s one of the best computer science programs in the nation and it is also right next to Silicon Valley which makes it even better. I’m already in a computer science class in high school and I’m interested in it."

"Coach Adams is someone who definitely knows what he is doing and knows how to get people to the league. He’s also a really cool guy and can tell he values character."

"I think coach Taylor is a winner. He’s won wherever he goes and I think that will happen with Stanford too. I like the culture he’s trying to bring into Stanford and what he stands for."

"I want to narrow down my list of schools to around 8-5 schools in March."

Softball-Alana Vawter named Preseason All-Pac-12; Stanford picked 2nd

Read that here. In case you are wondering, yes, I will be doing some softball. Baseball of course is the top priority of the spring sports, but I figured it wouldn't be bad to sprinkle in some softball coverage when I can. Especially since the softball team is supposed to be pretty good this year, too.

Question on Football Spring Practice... calendar out yet?

Has the calendar for Spring practice been made known as yet?

In more recent years early part has been scheduled for late Winter Quarter, with a break for deadweek/finals/spring break, then a resumption Spring Quarter in April with 'Red-White' scrimmage-finale then on mid-April Saturday. This year, if it holds, likely April 15th. But maybe Taylor might want to revert to earlier times by fitting it all into Spring Quarter/April? Also, will there be any open practices for us old railbirds?

Football Recruiting Key Quotes: Kari Jackson

Hey guys, I just caught up with 2024 4-star ILB Kari Jackson about why Stanford made his top seven. Below are key quotes. The rest will be saved for the article. He's planning on the March junior day visit and a decision sometime in the spring after he gets all his junior day visits done and what not.

On why Stanford made his top seven: "I would say just first the relationship I’ve built with the coaching staff and second, the education. I would say just the amount of opportunities that can be presented to you after you graduate from Stanford. It’s automatic attention and the eyes on you when you come out of Stanford. Those are the two reasons why."

On his relationship with Bobby April and the defensive staff: "We have a great relationship because he was at Wisconsin before. They offered me when they were still at Wisconsin and then we kept it going when they came to Stanford. Our relationship never changed. I thought it got better after the transition to Stanford."

On playing on the West Coast in California coming from Michigan: "Oh yeah, for sure. Being in California. It’s a state I’ve never been to before. Just the weather and everything else about it. It would be amazing."

On what areas of his game he's most focusing on: "I would say probably my blitzing off the edge and my coverage skills. Just putting myself in positions to cover more. Guard the slot man and cover the running back more and my blitzing both on the inside and the outside. Create more sacks."

On what he most enjoys about being an inside linebacker: "Yessir, I just like being able to be the leader of the defense. Be that somebody that people can lean on. I also like being that tone setter and someone who puts fear into the opponent on the first snap."
