Stanford NIL (not participating) in the Chron

Article about Stanford "Not participating in NIL" in the Chronicle.

Quote from. Muir: “We’re not using NIL as a recruiting tool,” he said, “and I don’t see that changing.” Which seems odd given that some NIL stuff (if small in scope) is actually happening.

Basketball Recruiting WBB recruiting notes: March

Alrighty, here is the women's basketball recruiting thread for March. The February thread is here.

Just like on the men's side, the first major piece of news on the women's hoops recruiting front is 2023 commit Courtney Ogden playing in the McDonald's All-American Game at the end of the month (March 28th). That's very exciting for her. So it'll be fun to see how she does in that event.

As far as 2024 recruits are concerned, three recently visited for the UCLA game: 5-star post Kate Koval, 4-star point guard Shay Ijiwoye, and 5-star guard Jordan Lee. Lee is a local out of St. Mary's High School in Stockton, so she's visited a few times. There's obviously other targets who they're on as well like Morgan Cheli out of Mitty and Toby Fournier out of Canada who has Stanford in her top eight. But, the fact that they recently got Koval, Ijiwoye, and Lee on a visit to see the UCLA game is certainly indicative of them building positive momentum with them. I'll see if I can find our more about where things sit with Cheli and Fournier as well as any other recruits who I'm sure @Bobbk will mention in this thread. :)

Football 2023 NFL Combine results

We should have a thread for discussion on this right?

Kyu Blu Kelly ran a 4.52 (awaiting final confirmation). By my unofficial tracking, that's tied for the 17th (with Atogwe) fastest by a Stanford alum this century. In terms of recent corners, equidistant between Adebo and Holder. Nowhere close to the speed demon DBs Stanley Wilson (still our fastest DB this century, RIP) and Justin Reid. I don't have a tracking in my records of all the other historical marks for Stanford combine participants, but here's how Kelly's testing compares today to other corners in his draft class:

4.52 40 (21 of 29)
1.49 10 yard split (tied for 7 of 29)
36.00" vertical (tied for 15 of 30)
10'11" broad jump (tied for 9 of 29)

3 cone, 20 yard shuttle, and bench still to come but the verdict is clear and I could have told you this five years ago (err, I did): Kelly is an NFL athlete with room to spare. Incredible athlete to be above-average in most things compared to the cream of the crop of an outstanding DB year. The issue with Kelly is how he plays between the lines. I'd be nervous to draft him despite how fond I am of him. But probably made himself some money today.

OT: SBF and Stanford

Interesting article in WaPo today about SBF and Stanford:

Here’s the crux:

Bankman-Fried, who grew up on campus, “certainly fits into what I regard as the kind of culture of Stanford,” says Richard White, a retired Stanford history professor — even if the 30-year-old former billionaire left Silicon Valley to attend MIT.

White and others characterize Stanford’sculture as a place where faculty and students are emboldened to take big risks in conceiving the next hot start-up or breakthrough innovation, often with easy access to capital, the conviction that they’re changing the world — and few consequences if things go south
