Fields and seeds were announced for Beach, Women's WP and Women's Golf.
For Beach, USC, UCLA and Stanford got the top three seeds. IT's a 17 team championship with 16 and 17 doing a play-in game to get eliminated by #1 USC. Stanford gets the 3-seed and will face Georgia State. The Stanford- GA State match will be televised on ESPNU @ 1 PM (PDT) Bracket: Beach Bracket
In Women's Golf, Stanford has held the top spot for the last two rankings. They received the overall #1 seed and will be playing at the Cle Elum Washington Regional. USC and UCLA also got #1 seeds for their regionals, although USC will have to travel to East Lansing for their regional. After USC's finish at the Pac-12, they got bumped to a #1 seed.
Regionals take place May 6-8, followed by the championship finals from May 17-22 in Carlsbad, California.
From the NCAA site: "In regional play, six 54-hole regional competitions will be played to determine the participants in the championship finals. In each regional, 12 teams and six individuals not on those teams will compete. The low five teams and the individual not on those teams will advance to the finals. Beginning in 2024, regional champion awards will be given to the team champions.
In the championship finals, all 30 teams and six individuals will complete 54 holes of stroke play. Following 54 holes of competition, the top 15 teams along with the top nine individuals will advance for one additional day of stroke play to determine the top eight teams for match-play competition and the 72-hole stroke-play individual champion. Stanford has a very well tested match play team with many of their players having participated in recent Junior Ryder Cup and Junior Solheim Cup tournaments.
In Women's WP, there are 9 teams in the tournament. Stanford or USC has won the last 13 tournaments and faced each other in the finals 9 times. Won't happen this time as they face each other in the first round. Stanford got hit heavily by the Olympic year. They have 5 current players, 4 on the USA national team and 1 on the Australian Olympic team. USC and UCLA had a lot that have finished collegiate competition on the team. UCLA is seeded 1 and undefeated for the year. The winner of Stanford-USC gets to play them in the 2nd round. Only Stanford, USC and UCLA have won this tournament that began in 2001.
In Men's golf, Stanford had a rough start, but finished in 3rd place. The format was play 6 and score 5 which places a lot of emphasis on team depth.
Karl Vilips took the individual championship by one stroke and his teammate, Michael Thorbjornsen won last year. Throbjornsen had a rough tournament by his standards. He had a blistering 65 in the first round, but shot 76-75-73 for the last three rounds and finished T8th. Stanford's #3 was Ethan Gao at +13 T22nd, Jake Bieber-Frankel +14 T29th, Barclay Brown T44th was at +19 with an 82 in the first round and Sean Karl Dobson scoring +35 finishing 68th out of 72.
Regionals are announced May 1 at 11 AM and Stanford is hosting the men's western regional at Stanford May 13-15th. Although they're currently ranked outside of the top 25, they'll be in the field. Brown and Thorbjornsen need to get back to their earlier form and Coach Ray needs to find another solid tournament player.
In the PGA Tour University, Michael still has a strong hold on first place which concludes just after the NCAA golf tournament. The No. 1 player will earn PGA TOUR membership for the remainder of the current season, as well as the following season. Players finishing Nos. 2-5 are exempt on Korn Ferry Tour for the remainder of the current season, and they are exempt into Final Stage of PGA TOUR Q-School presented by Korn Ferry. Players finishing Nos. 6-10 earn conditional status on Korn Ferry Tour for the remainder of the current season, and exempt status for the North America Swing of PGA TOUR Americas. They are exempt into Second Stage of PGA TOUR Q-School presented by Korn Ferry. Players finishing Nos. 11-25 are exempt for the North America Swing of PGA TOUR Americas, and they are exempt into Second Stage of PGA TOUR Q-School presented by Korn Ferry.
Besides Thornbjornsen, Karl Vilips is currently ranked in the PGA Tour University and is currently at #20 and he is bound to go up since it doesn't reflect winning the Pac-12 individual title and he should move him up from his #25 WAGR rankings as well, worth additional points.
Softball selection show ill be on ESPN2 on May 12th at 4 PM. Pac-12 softball tournament at Stanford May 8-11th. Only question is how high a seed will Stanford get for the softball world series.
Definitely a down year for the baseball team. They have 19-22 record but definitely a young team that misses Montgomery. Amazing how many young arms on the team. Lets see how they do in the next 11 games before the tournament. Winner of the tournament gets the automatic CWS berth!
