There's a Michael Thorbjornsen sighting! He hasn't been in a tournament since he withdrew from the US Men's Amateur with a stress fracture in his back last summer and also missed the Walker cup and all of the fall Stanford tournaments. He's teeing it up at the DP World tournament in Dubai and tied for 41st after round 1. He was even par with 4 birds and 2 doubles. Without Thorbjornsen, the men's team has fallen to 59th in the NCAA rankings. Thorbjornsen has slipped to 4th in the World Amateur rankings from 2nd due to his inactivity. He still leads the PGA Tour University standings where finishing first after the NCAA tournament earns a tour card.
Last year, the Men's came in 2nd at their regional and finished 8th at the NCAA championships. The team still has Barclay Brown and Karl Vilips as solid and veteran players. The next team event is at the end of the month at the National Invitational Tournament in Tucson.
Coach Ray signed three 2024 recruits. One is T. K. Chnatananuwat from Bangkok (you couldn't tell by his surname?) He won as an amateur on the Asian tour when he was 15!!! He climbed to 6th in the rankings but is currently ranked 56th. The other star is J. Leng Jr. who played for the USA in the Junior Ryder Cup this past summer. The 3rd signee is a local player, Logan Kim who is ranked 4th in California Junior golf.
Rachel Heck still seems to be on the mend. She didn't play in any fall tournaments and just played in Santiago at the Pan Am games. She shot a +8 over 4 rounds and finished in 14th. Her scores were 78-70-71-77. Brooke Seay didn't played a round in the fall and . The Pac-12 preview is set for mid-February in Hawaii. We'll get a better idea of Rachel and Sadie's play and if Seay is back. but the the lower classmen have been doing great led by Sampedro, Xu and Ganne. For many of us wondering if Angelina Ye was every going to play like her frosh year. She graduated last spring and won her first pro tournament in China last month. She won the 2023 Women's China Open.
As mentioned in an earlier thread, Walker has a solid class coming in next year as she has to replace Seay, Englemann, and Heck. She has 3 Euros coming in along with America Leigh Chien. Their WAGR rankings are 10, 31, 38 and 99. Meja Örtengren and Nora Sundberg are both Swedish and Andrea Revuelta is from Spain. All four competed in the PING Junior Solheim Cup and Junior Ryder Cup.
