  • David Bailiff, the Rice head coach, is under contract thru the 2018 season. It's time for this program to start looking for his successor.
  • Stanford used a 3TE set (did not include Parkinson) twice thru 3 quarters. One play resulted in a TD to Smith.
  • Stanford showed it's goal line/short yardage personnel twice. It included Harrington, Wilson and, in a surprise, Chaffin replacing Burkett. Scarlett was the RB all but assuring Lund will shirt.
  • The ILB rotation of last year did not happen in G1.
  • Re: the QB's. I see almost identical skill sets. They are all good runners, not great. They all have above ave arm strength, not great. They are all sometime accurate and sometimes not so much. Let me ask you this - when was the last time you saw either one extend a play behind the LOS to complete a pass down the field. And KJ hasn't played as much of course but its hard to imagine the next Jake Plummer, or Johnny Football, or Lamar Jackson or Taysom Hill. We have a lesser version of college Ryan Leaf in all three IMO.. I'm not saying anything other than our 3 guys are really similar playing the position and it is hard to strongly argue for one guy over the others unless you already heave some built-in bias.
On to ROSTER ARROWS. Arrows are given relative to a player's status on the roster for that game. For example, let's take Jay Tyler. He will receive an arrow up for starting, playing throughout and his role as PR1. Jay Tyler's performance would not have warranted an arrow up. This is not a subjective exercise - well, sometimes tough decisions have to be made :) - as the coaches give us the answers.

ARROW UP

2 IRWIN - WR1 starter and in the entire game plan. No change from last year.
2 SIMMONS - ST monster from last season finally makes it on the field at safety as the starter.
3 ANTOINE - RS frosh got series 4, 5 and 6 of the first half at NB.
4 MURPHY - returns to the back end of the two-deep at CB with Holder back. Got series 4, 5 and 6 of the first half. On all the ST's.
4 JTYLER - Starter at WR as JJ sits and rotates with Wedington and Stewart throughout. PR1 never looks too comfortable.
5 BUNCOM - Starter in 'nickel' which essentially places him at S as Reid moves over the slot.
5 WEDINGTON - On the field for the 2nd snap of the game and tallied 15 snaps thru 3 quarters, including a couple plays designed for him. Physical blocker for a slight dude.
8 REID - Starter at S and NB
8 STEWART - Second in reps at the position to IRWIN. The guy is a tough cover.
9 EDWARDS - Tough call here as he loses the battle to start to SIMMONS, however he does see 3 series in the first half. Will be interesting to see what happens at SC with him. I don't think this is a time-share.
9 SCHULTZ - TE1 actually targeted a few times!
10 CHRYST - QB1 still undefeated. Played fine. Took an awful delay penalty after the offense got to the line with :20 on play clock.
11 ALEXANDER - Tandems with MURPHY as second-team CB. Gets series 4, 5 and 6 in first half. Also was KOR1 but misjudged the opening kick which fell in front of him for a double.
13 HOLDER - Healthy and back to his starting CB spot.
20 LOVE - RB1 met little resistance in G1. Surprised he was caught on the first play actually.
20 OKEREKE - Starts at ILB and gets 5 of the first 6 series putting an end to the silly rotation of '16.
21 ROBINSON - Part of the OLB rotation now in year 2. Received series 3 and 4 in the first half.
22 SCARLETT - RB2 with a lot of reps in G1 including short yardage.
24 MEEKS - 3-year DB starter
27 BARTON - Starter at ILB gets 4 of the 6 first half series and also on both KO teams.
32 ALFIERI - Much like EDWARDS, disappointing he isn't starting. Does play at ILB in the 3rd and 4th series. No ST for Joey I would imagine to try and save the shoulder. He did not look very comfortable inside in G1.
34 KALAMBAYI - OLB1 3 year starter and plays in 5 of first 6 series.
35 MARX - FB1 back healthy
51 SWANN - DL5 sees first action in last 1H series. Needs to be in the mix at SC to stay on here.
52 TOOHILL - Starter at OLB with TYLER out and plays 4 of 6 series in 1H also everywhere on ST.
54 WILSON - Rotated with FANAIKA in 1H at RG. Also comes on in short yardage. 1 really bad rep in pass pro but not bad in all. This tells you pretty clearly how sad the Tucker situation is.
57 WILLIAMS - The first DL sub off the sideline received series 4 and 6.
63 HERBIG - Starter at LG
64 BRIGHT - Starter at LT
65 CHAFFIN - Gets the arrow here for replacing BURKETT in short yardage and holding off POWELL for C2.
66 PHILLIPS - 4-year starter at NT
71 FANAIKA - Starter at RG. Just don't like the athleticism he brings to the group.
72 LITTLE - Got a series at RT in 1H. Was also brought in twice as an inline TE for pass pro. Looked solid.
73 BURKETT - Returning starter at C.
74 HAMILTON - Takes adv of the HALL injury to start at RT. Big test looming.
79 SARELL - Received reps at LT in 2H and holds down the left side on PAT/FG.
80 COTTON - Starter at DE where he played the first 5 of 6 series.
80 HARRINGTON - Fits the Shaw offensive narrative perfectly. He's going to block and then block some more. Saw about a dozen snaps thru 3 quarters.
82 SMITH - Second to SCHULTZ of the position group in snaps to start career. Nice weapon. Still not the surest of hands as he couldn't secure one ball and another he caught with his pads as it went thru his hands.
84 PARKINSON - Targeted on 3 of his first 4 snaps. Don't get it twisted, he's not going to block anyone but he is a weapon and good for Shaw to utilize him. It's funny. I'm congratulating the head coach for using a weapon.
97 JACKSON - Starter at DE. Not going to get to the QB much but does a good job holding up on the run. Usually comes off for the nickel.

ARROW DOWN

3 COSTELLO - QB3 had the spring and August to bury BURNS but couldn't apparently. Looked better than what we have seen from him to date.
6 WILLIAMS - First rep came with 5:30 to go in the 3rd.
15 PEREZ - Out of the ILB rotation in G1. Got 1 series in 1H.
21 IB-S - Not going to have a role.
28 FRANKLIN - Senior S can't crack two-deep.
31 BRANCH - No reps in 1H. See PEREZ.
44 PALMA - No reps in 1H. See BRANCH.
62 MAIHEN - Backing up HERBIG is not where you want to be in year 3.
77 TUCKER - MIA. First time the big fella has ever been on the wrong side of the arrows. #FreeTucker
78 HATTIS - Nothing in G1
86 VEACH - 4th Q reps for the senior.
99 PEEK - MIA

OTHERS - CLASS OF '16
6 BUTLER - Sees first action on KO cover and CB late.
10 FOX - Gets last series of 1H as OLB5. No reps on 1H ST a little concerning.
22 EBOH - Late reps at CB. However plays on both return teams.
25 PRYST - " " S. No ST
28 MADDOX - RB3 gets first rep in 3rd quarter. No apparent role.
55 POWELL - Unable to move into two-deep in year 2. Had an almost perfect series at C at the end of the game. Kind of surprised he hasn't taken CHAFFIN yet. Do not stand next to TUCKER!!
91 SCHAFFER - DL6 gets late reps for first playing time.
