Stanford has many limiting factors in regards to being a successful Football program -- academic requirements, lack of fan support, etc.
I think the single biggest limiting factor is that the total enrollment for the school hovers around 16,000.
For reference, Texas A&M has 77,000, Ohio State has 60,000, even USC has 50,000 ... Cal has 45,000
This is a snowball effect. The more students you have, the bigger your fan base, more people to come to games, donate back to the program, etc.
It doesn't get talked about as much as the academic requirements, but in my opinion this is the biggest reason for lack of success in Football and MBB
A counter point is that Notre Dame has a total enrollment of 13,000. But they are also the most storied College Football program in the world. That helps matters
