“More imaginative play calls--that's what we need."

What does that mean? What's an imaginative play? And why might some of those be the answer for our offense?

When’s the last time an opponent beat us with their superior imaginations? Oregon would beat us running eight plays, one of them at least a dozen times a game. They won not because they had more plays, but because they'd mastered their execution of seven or eight.

If you execute well, your plays work. If you don’t, none of your plays do.

We need to execute.

A lot of fans mention Mike Leach in this context—“offensive genius.” Here’s what Mike says. “I don’t teach a lot of plays because you can’t. The kids won’t get them right. So I teach a handful of plays, and we’ll run each one from a bunch of different formations. That way, I don’t have to teach a kid a bunch of plays. I just need to teach him different places to stand.”
