Levani Damuni's commitment to Stanford shows the strength of two (three?) recruiting pipelines: Players from Utah and and members of the LDS church. (Edit: Damuni is of Fijian ancestry and I may have been incorrect to refer to him as Polynesian.) A lot of credit needs to be given to defensive coordinator Lance Anderson for his work making that possible. Stanford is now an established destination for LDS athletes coming back from missions or arriving straight from high school. It's no small accomplishment that the Cardinal are now a consistent challenger, and winner, in those recruiting situations.

Damuni will take a two-year mission before he arrives at The Farm. He was recruited as a linebacker and is a four-star with offers reported from Utah, BYU, Virginia, Vanderbilt, Boise State, Colorado and Oregon State. In addition to being a good player he was positively overwhelmed by the academic opportunities at Stanford. He left the official visit unsure of what would be his major. He was interested in everything he heard from various professors during the Saturday brunch of Big Visit weekend.

Even though Damuni's commitment won't impact who is on the field for Stanford during the next two seasons, his pledge helps build up the success of this recruiting class in the public perception contest of stars and class rankings.
