CATCH HIM IF YOU CAN

The breakout star of Stanford’s 41-31 Homecoming victory over Arizona was sophomore wide receiver Simi Fehoko, who exploded for career highs of 97 receiving yards and two touchdowns. After two receptions through his first five games of the season, Simi has hauled in eight catches in his last three games.

“Simi is a guy who showed a lot of promise in camp,” says wide receivers coach Bobby Kennedy. “His season got off to a slow start because there is a learning curve at this level, but now that he has gotten comfortable, Simi is starting to show what he is capable of doing.”

On his 44-yard touchdown reception in the second quarter, Simi raced past his defender in single coverage and presented a great target for senior QB K.J. Costello.

Simi is a 6’4” 226-pound athlete who runs a 4.39 40, and that is a difficult matchup to defend. It also has taken a lot of hard work for the Sandy, UT native to get here. After Simi graduated high school in 2016, he spent two years on his LDS church mission in Seoul, South Korea—away from football and all of his training.

When he arrived at Stanford in the summer of 2018, Simi weighed 210 pounds with 12.4 percent body fat, jumping a 30-inch vertical leap and a 9’6” broad jump. He recorded a 163-pound power clean, a 255-pound squat and a 223-pound bench with zero reps at 225 pounds.

One year later, Simi had transformed his body by dropping two percent body fat and adding more than 18 pounds of muscle. He grew in strength and explosion with a 32-inch vertical leap, 10’0” broad jump, 285-pound power clean, 445-pound squat and 315-pound bench with 16 reps at 225 pounds.

Though only a sophomore at Stanford, Simi celebrated his 22nd birthday today. He has become a man.

Not only can Simi beat press coverage and run past defenders, but also he can leap above and outmuscle them for contested balls. On his red zone touchdown in the third quarter, Simi elevated and grabbed the ball over the helmet of the hapless Arizona defender. Reminiscent of the end zone highlights that current Philadelphia Eagles wide receiver JJ Arcega-Whiteside gave us on The Farm, Simi is an inch and a half taller and runs faster than his former mentor.

Not to be overlooked, the passing half of these connections came from K.J. Costello, who gave a big shot in the arm to the Cardinal offense with his return to the field. Five weeks after he was injured in the Oregon game, K.J. brought back not only his throwing talent but also his signature energy to the field. We felt it all game long.

Heading into our final four-game stretch of the regular season, it is an excellent time for this passing tandem and the other cylinders of the Stanford engine to be firing at full power. Tune in Saturday at Noon PT / 1 PM MT to watch the Cardinal continue to race ahead at Colorado.

K.J. & SUPER CADE

K.J. Costello invited long time friend, cancer and stroke survivor Super Cade to The Farm to tell his story to the team. The team carried that inspiration into the weekend to top Arizona, 41-31.

FAST FIVE FACTS

· Stanford has averaged 45 points per game in contests at Colorado since the Buffaloes joined the Pac-12 in 2011. In those two matchups in Boulder, the Cardinal has claimed 42-10 (2015) and 48-0 (2012) victories.

· Following his pair of scores against Arizona, fifth-year senior RB Cameron Scarlett now ranks No. 10 in school history with 22 career rushing touchdowns. With two more, Cameron would tie Darrin Nelson and Kerry Carter at No. 8 in the Stanford record books.

· Sophomore WR Brycen Tremayne has recorded two receptions and three touchdowns this year. How? The former walk-on has scored offensive touchdowns versus Oregon State and Arizona, in addition to a blocked punt he recovered for a score against UCLA.

· Senior QB and team captain K.J. Costello came out of the Arizona game healthy and remains our starter for Colorado on Saturday. Junior Davis Mills is improving and back throwing in practice; his status for Colorado will be determined late in the week.

· Stanford alumni currently lead the NFL in rushing (Christian McCaffrey), touchdowns (McCaffrey), tackles (Blake Martinez), tight end receptions (Austin Hooper) and offensive guard pass blocking (David DeCastro).
