(Disclaimer: I hated seeing Chryst go down yesterday and wish him as speedy and painless a recovery as possible).

Two months ago, just over half of us wanted to see Keller Chryst benched and KJ Costello's redshirt burned. Many agonized over the fact that Chryst would look just good enough against terrible defenses and secure a stranglehold on the QB1 job despite the possibility of superior talent/upside from Costello. I was expecting the inevitable QB competition through spring and into fall with Costello looking as good as or better than Chryst but losing out because he hasn't mastered the playbook but (don't worry!) he'll still get in for the occasional offensive series. And of course, CSR losing our collective shit during the entire process.

Well, Costello now knows that he is starting against Rice in August. He and the coaches have eight months to prepare. He will get all the snaps in practice, all preparation will focus on helping him to be as successful as possible. If he sucks to start the season, so be it. Based on Fresbone's analysis, Chryst should be ready to step back in by October and lead us back to a mid-tier bowl game if needed.

I don't mean to be overly glib and suggest that the injury is good for the program - it is terribly unfortunate - but I do think it could ultimately result in a positive outcome. I'm curious of those of you who wanted KJ's shirt to be burned this past month (that was not my position), agree that this could actually end up being a good thing.
