The short version is: Zombie SI’s *awful* management couldn't pay the licensing fees for, uh, publishing material under the Sports Illustrated brand (which… hang on, they have to LICENSE that????)
And of course their whole business model is “trick people into reading low-quality and sometimes AI-generated crap because it has the Sports Illustrated name attached,” which will no longer work without the name.
On the one hand, this is depressing. On the other, here’s hoping the next entity that licenses the brand, uh, embodies some sort of ethos other than “an entity that’s licensing a brand,” I guess?
