Ziaire Williams announced his commitment to Stanford Sunday. The No. 6 overall recruit in the 2020 class chose the Cardinal over offers from every superpower that Stanford fans have grown accustomed to rarely, if ever, beating for the a recruit. It's a remarkable achievement for the coaching staff and for Williams to get into school and decide to take the more challenging path.
Jerod Haase, Adam Cohen, Jeff Wulbrun and Jesse Pruitt recruited Williams and outworked the competition to convince Williams that he belonged at Stanford and to not take his apparent "one-and-done" caliber skill set to the traditional destinations for such talent. Instead, Williams will come to The Farm and his arrival will immediately elevate Stanford to the status of contender for the conference crown, even if Tyrell Terry does not stay in school. (This is, of course, assuming there is a basketball season.)
Williams is the highest rated recruit to commit to Stanford since Rivals began ranking recruits in 2002. The only other five stars to sign are Brook Lopez (No. 10 overall), Dwight Powell (No. 25) and Robin Lopez (No. 28).
There is a solid argument to make that Williams' commitment is the most impressive of the modern era, and maybe before. I ask that question of members of this community: Is this the best recruiting win in men's basketball history?
