This is a follow-up to Matt’s post from Thursday in the thread “FNL weekend visitor list as confirmed (July28)”. I was out of town and had to wait until I was back to my big-boy computer to prepare this response. In Matt’s post, he listed the 54 top-400 Stanford recruits for 2012-2017 and tallied the counts by position.
In February I posted computations of percentiles by position. The percentiles for a position are based on 247 composite ratings of all recruits at that position that signed with a PAC-12 team or Notre Dame in the 2012-2017 classes. The idea of the percentiles is to assess how we did at signing the “available” talent at each position.
The mapping of 247 composite ratings to national ranks varies from year to year, but the cutoff for top-400 is always around .8800. Here are the percentiles corresponding to a rating of .8800 by position.
DB 68.1
DL 79.1
LB 66.6
OL 67.7
QB 60.0
RB 68.8
FB 85.3
TE 75.0
WR 70.3
The ratings and national ranks mask the variations in the services’ assessed talent levels across positions. A DL with a rating of .8800 is at the 79th percentile, while a LB with the same rating is at the 67th percentile.
Following are Stanford’s 62 top recruits for 2012-2017 as measured by position percentile. Each line shows the rank (within this group) by position percentile, the rank by 247 national rank (position on Matt’s list), and the position percentile. “XX” indicates that the recruit did not appear on Matt’s list. The list has 62 names in order to include all 54 of the names on Matt’s list. I added Fehoko to the list (his national rank was 157) and changed Kaumatule from TE to DL; he was recruited as a DL, IIRC.
