I'm relatively new to this board and am curious to get people's thoughts on Shaw's play-calling. The narrative last year was very much "Shaw adjusted following week 1 to have more creative offensive play-calling and shut his critics up." I'm not so sure. Yes, there were a few more bubble screens and wildcats (both of which I hate) after week 1 but to me the biggest change was simply the performance of the offensive line. Shaw is a solid play-caller when we have a dominant O-Line, which fortunately has been true most years. But the one year we had a below-average O-Line he just could not adjust his approach to our personnel. Obviously this is a concern in the upcoming year given that our O-line projects as league average at best. There's also the issue of extra conservative play-calling in fourth quarters when we have a close lead (4th quarter offensive drives against ND last year come to mind).
All of the above being said, obviously Shaw is a terrific recruiter, great at picking assistants and just generally top notch at all of the non-play calling aspects of the job (which are many).
