-Obviously the big news is Harrison Phillips' torn ACL, which will sideline him for the season.
"We're going to have lean on some guys because we can't play three guys," Shaw said.
"Jordan Watkins came along a little bit toward the end of training camp. We're going to need him to step up and play. We'll see if that gets Luke Kaumatule back in the mix on the inside. We'll see if Nate Lohn gets back on the mix on the inside. We have a few other options but those are the main candidates right now."
Would Stanford play Dylan Jackson or Wes Annan?
"I think it's most likely that they're going to redshirt. You never know if a lot of stuff happens. but I think both of those guys are going to contribute a lot in the future. I think this year they need to develop."
-Limitations on Devon Cajuste?
"Just volume. He is 100 percent healthy, not injured. Just kind of the conditioning of getting back to playing. Yes he'll start but at the same time you'll see Francis Owusu out there, you'll see Trent Irwin out there."
-Shaw on the OL
"It wasn't perfect. It wasn't up to our standard. But I think we started something that's pretty good. We have to clean up a few things... When we get in midseason form it should be a good group."
Shaw said Josh Garnett played "extremely well," and was relatively complimentary when discussing several of the other OL individually as well.
-Shaw was asked about the lack of deep passes. He said Northwestern's coverage dictated that approach.
"We're not going to force it. We take calculated shots versus specific coverages. Besides that we need to be efficient in our passing game."
-Shaw: Offensively and defensive we did just about everything you could to lose a game. Not scheme related not personnel related. We'll always of course make some adjustments, a little bit scheme and a little bit personnel.
(Specifically, Shaw referenced some of the mistakes - i.e. three offsides.)
-What would Shaw say to claims he's too conservative?
"I say don't live in the moment and look at what we've done. And even look at what we've done since Andrew Luck left. Don't even look at the time Andrew was here... There are multiple times we've scored over 30 and 60 once and 50... I want to say four of the last six games of the year last year we scored over 30. But it's a combination of how well we play on offense to beat somebody... The formula of the West Coast offense hasn't changed in however many years..."
-Is no huddle a key component of getting into an offensive rhythm?
"I think it definitely is another aspect of our game that helps us," Kevin Hogan said. "We kind of get out there with a group and we can get in a rhythm. It definitely helps because we have certain plays that we feel very comfortable getting first downs with. That's something we're going to be practicing this week and I think we'll have it on Saturday."
