Here are the Pac-12/Stanford schedule placements in the preseason AP poll and preseason coaches poll:
AP
9. Notre Dame
11. Oregon
15. USC
20. Washington
24. Utah
25. Arizona State
42. UCLA
NR: Kansas State, Vanderbilt, Cal, Oregon State, Washington State, Arizona (Stanford does not play), Colorado (Stanford does not play)
Coaches
7. Notre Dame
12. Oregon
14. USC
21. Washington
26. Utah
28. Arizona State
42. UCLA
56. Cal
56. Stanford
NR: Kansas State, Vanderbilt, Oregon State, Washington State, Arizona (Stanford does not play), Colorado (Stanford does not play)
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
No significant difference between these two. Presumably the AP reporters' view of Stanford is similar to the coaches, which is to say Stanford is a lesser, irrelevant Power Five program. Stanford being named in the coaches poll does not indicate a higher view, as only 44 teams got votes in the AP poll.
I'd be very curious to find out which coach put Stanford #25 to give us one point in the coaches poll. I know how to see which half of the coaches nationally vote (Mike Bloomgren, Karl Dorrell, Jedd Fisch, Clay Helton Brian Kelly, Jimmy Lake, Nick Rolovich, and Kyle Whittingham are among the coaches who do, David Shaw does not) but I don't know if they release individual ballots except at the end of the season. If they do release them and somebody know where i can look, would be interesting to see who our admirer is.
Seven games against teams that come into the season with more hype. The way the schedule shapes up I think the first month is critical. While nobody expects us to beat USC at the Coliseum, Kansas State, Vanderbilt, and UCLA (at Stanford) are games we should win. That first month needs to put some money in the bank. Hopefully we can be 3-1 heading into the Oregon game and the brutal stretch that follows. 2-2 is just as likely I think, given the tough travel physically/body clock-wise. 0-4 or 1-3 would be complete disasters.
