I was out of town when this was published but I don't think anyone referenced it on the Board in the last week. Here is a Q & A with Andy Staples, one of the top national college football writers on The Athletic

You’re a three-star recruit that could go to any school, unlikely to get a shot at the NFL. You’re a high floor, low ceiling ’tweener. Where do you go for your future? — Josh

I’m probably going to Stanford. That’s the best free degree I can get while still playing at the highest level of college football.

If the Ivy League schools offered athletic scholarships, I’d choose one of them. I was recruited by most of the teams in that league out of high school. I drank my first beer on an official visit at Princeton. But my parents were high school teachers. They made enough money that I didn’t qualify for serious financial aid but not so much that I would have asked them to contribute to a very expensive education. Because I assumed I’d be a newspaper reporter who never made more than about $40,000 a year, I decided not to bury myself in student loan debt and took an academic scholarship to Florida. There, I walked on and immediately realized why the Gators didn’t recruit me to play football.

I have told both my children that if Stanford offers them a scholarship in anything that they should take it. I’ll support any decision they make, but I’d love to see them get the best possible education with the best future networking opportunities — preferably for free. Failing that, I’m hoping they choose Arizona State or Ohio University and let me party with them.
