Pls explain star ratings

With so much discussion right now about star ratings, it occurred to me that I never figured out how these are assigned and computed.

How much is subjective? What objective factors weigh in? Are there a finite number of slots for each star, or is it unlimited based on a scoring formula? How dynamic are ratings ?
