Just have to chime in on Jimmy G.
All the Talking Heads are missing the most fundamental point on the Jimmy re-sign. Re-negotiating deal and re-signing Jimmy gives the ‘Niners its best/only chance of trading him and getting something in return. It was clear from the jump that no team was going to take on Jimmy G.’s salary of $24M for this upcoming season (even before he had the surgery); and it was equally clear that teams with any interest at all could simply wait until the ‘Niners inevitably cut him and then bid for his services. In that scenario, the ‘Niners get nothing – other than a $7M cap hit – and Jimmy signs with whomever he wants/can.
By renegotiating, the ‘Niners now preserve the possibility – however remote – of actually getting something from another team in a trade for Jimmy, whose price tag for this upcoming season is much more reasonable/favorable. And the Niners’ will have a say in where he goes (if they even care). And the team's cap hit may go down (though I’m not sure of this).
Anyway, I view this as win-win – for team and Jimmy. ‘Niners hold open possibility of getting value for Jimmy (whom they want to move on from); and in process have a proven insurance policy at backup QB. Jimmy is probably just looking for a bridge K, given how most teams set at QB for this season, anyway, and hoping to enter free agent market and big K next season. And $6M (as opposed to being released and potentially sitting out a year) – for holding a clip board – is damn good work if you can get it. And who knows? Maybe Jimmy subs in for a game or two and can be “the hero for the day.”
As far as getting in Trey’s head and impeding his development, I call BS on that. Trey just needs to be pretty good for ‘Niners to be a playoff team and contender. And if he’s not “pretty good,” then who cares if he’s benched? He’d deserve to be benched. Regardless, I wouldn’t be surprised if Jimmy is on another team by Week 3 at latest. We’ll see.
