I’m traveling to the Bay Area this weekend with my wife and young kids for what I suspect will be the last game I see live in the Sharbaugh era.

The trip down memory lane to the 2008 season (in another thread) got me thinking of the Oregon State game in 2002. We were terrible. It was raining. I didn’t go into the game and outside the stadium was so empty I remember doing donuts in the grove with some crazy British guy, another complete maniac who is now a very successful tech executive, and a Tom Cruise lookalike who had just transferred to The Farm from a UC. Like real donuts in a car, many beers deep, as twilight descended on the stadium. I probably won’t do donuts this weekend (unless anyone wants to!!!) but I am fully expecting a similar vibe to that afternoon twenty years ago.

Thinking back to the trough of the early 00s to the trough of the present fills me with mixed emotions. It is incredibly frustrating how Shaw has taken a Top 3 FBS program and turned it into a program that probably wouldn’t be a Top 25 FCS program in such a short period. At the same time, it was fun looking forward to every fall, going to games where you couldn’t park in the grove much less do donuts and all your friends were there, and playing on New Years Day.

Thanks for the memories Coach Shaw! But I also hope I’m NOT wrong and this really is the last game I’ll watch you coach at Stanford! When people feel this way about you, it’s a good sign that it’s time to “do the honorable thing and resign!”
