I believe this is year 3 of the Bloomgren-Shaw show. Last year there were clear signs of "growing pains." Simply opining, but from a purely managerial point of view:
1) Indecision about identity probably led to making the offense too multiple. This led to being capable of many things, but not being exceptional at any. This would play out particularly in the offensive line (because it requires a lot of coordination) and individual mistakes at other positions simply because the number of reps for any particular play would be limited.
2) Limited experience at several positions. Running back and tight end for sure and fullback after Lee Ward.
3) Kevin Hogan's personal situation was uncontrollable. What was controllable was how he was used early, and how it changed later.
With the exception of the loss of Ward, think we are potentially (and substantially) improved with what was learned and what is more mature this year. Also think that two freshmen (Irwin and Love) may add to what is already the makings of a pretty good offense.
