Hey guys, I just completed my interviews with Andrew Luck & Sam Fisher about their general manager/assistant general manager positions. 30+ minutes between the two guys so a lot of good content coming your way. I got a lot of transcribing to do!
But just to share a few notes while this is still fresh on my mind:
Luck confirmed it was President Levin that initiated the move to have him step into the role. Luck made it clear they are serious about winning here. This was all about allowing Coach Taylor to focus on coaching and recruiting.
Luck also made it clear that with respect to roster management, it’s a collaborative process with him and Coach Taylor. They both talk through things on that front.
With the transfer portal, Luck made it sound like that side of things was an adventure, but he likes the guys they’ve added. He said they are committed to ensuring guys have high academic standards because they don’t want to compromise what Stanford’s core mission is and then he also is confident that guys who are great football players and great students do exist.
On the recruiting side, it sounds like Taylor and his coaching staff are still primarily in charge of that, but at the same time Luck is involved and having conversations about that with them.
Luck also likes what Lifetime Cardinal is doing and feels like Allen Thorpe has been very supportive. So it sounds like they are taking that part seriously.
Luck made it clear that it is a truly collaborative effort with the university with respect to admissions, NIL, etc. President Levin really cares about this and they’re trying to make sure everyone across different departments are on the same page.
Just on a personal note, Luck is a super laid back, chill guy. Very personable and likable. You can tell he really loves Stanford.
Lastly, Sam Fisher said his big role is to help keep Andrew pointed in the right direction and bring his background with start ups to help add a fresh perspective. Just in terms of helping this operate like a cohesive organization. Like Andrew, Sam is a laid back, personal guy.
One interesting thing Sam mentioned was seeing Luck share with the staff in an impromptu moment how they would run a certain play in the NFL. I asked if that means Luck will be involved in game planning and Fisher stressed that was just more of an impromptu kinda thing that happened. But, there’s nothing that would prohibit or prevent Luck from offering insights in those areas.
It seems like Luck is going to at least be touching on every virtual area of this that you can think of.
More to come in my articles, but this should give you a taste at least of what is to come. 😊
