I’m watching the Broncos - Seahawks game tonight and during halftime there is a commercial for a sports drink that features Caleb Williams. There is no identification of SC but he’s in what appears to be an SC training uniform (at least it’s SC’s colors) and there are female cheerleaders that are in SC colors. This is the first tv commercial that I’ve seen so far with a college football player starring as himself. I totally get the notion that players should be able to capitalize on there own name/likeness, particularly when the schools and so many others are profiting off their performances. But it doesn’t mean I have to like it. It totally changes the essence of college football for me. And I’m sure the fact that Stanford is likely at a competitive disadvantage as a result of this new era only increases my turnoff but to this development. It’s all about the money…almost anywhere you look. Me choosing turn away from something I’ve been passion about since I was a kid will have no impact on the sport. But I wonder if this ends up changing the landscape so profoundly that it becomes unsustainable as an annual pastime that so many of us have long cherished. Certainly, some schools might choose to opt out, I would think.
