At first, when I saw that our team had only a score of 406.75 in yesterdays competition, I was surprised, concerned, and a bit mystified, given that we had scored 420.1 last week. Of course when I looked at the full results and saw that 5 of our best gymnasts weren't competing for Stanford, but for team USA, the reason for the lower score became obvious. So I thought I'd figure the score if all were competing for us, and the score came out to 424.70. For comparison, 423.628 won a national championship for us last year, with Oklahoma 2nd at 414.555.
Bear in mind that that score is deceptively high, since the team can't compete 10 iguys in each eveny and cherry pick the 5 best scores. On the other hand, if every one was competing, people wouldn't have to compete in as many events, and might be fresher and possibly score higher.
In any event, given that its early season, and we're missing agruably 2 of our 3 best gymnasts, these results seem fantastic to me. But not really surprising, since we seem to have a super team.
