First, congrats to the team fro its W over SC last night. Really solid win in all respects with many guys contributing. I thought going in that SC would be so focused on revenge that they might destroy us with all out pressure, but our guys were superb at handling it. SC played excellent defense, yet we scored enough to pull it out.
My question is; why do we have an offense where our post player is not only always at the high post but out near the 3 pt. line? I can understand it with Reynaud who has a good outside shot and passes well, but with Keefe and Kisunas?
Keefe has been playing really well and as as starter the team has been much improved. But he does all his damage on offense down low. Same for Kisunas. But up high, they are nothing more than a "relief valve" for the other players needing to get rid of the ball temporarily. Both James and Lucas don't take shots out there and their D opponent gives them plenty of space and sags in the middle so it's not like we pull out the opposing big man to open up space for our other guys to drive.
And neither James or Lucas have shown to be adept at passing so they aren't helping in that way from the high post. The one thing I have seen positive is that lately James has shown the ability to occasionally drive from there and he's been relatively effective when he has done so. Still, it seems a waste to post those guys there. If anything I would rather see them have more movement and go back and forth between low and high. That would give them more opportunities to get passes and score with shots they will take and can make. Otherwise it limits their potential to be offensive threats that opponents have to guard more carefully. Finally, always posting them high as we do is too predictable. If they need to set a screen, why can't they start at the low post and come up so that the opposing guard isn't expecting it?
Anyway, I'm curious to know what others think and what is the rationale for this. Maybe Poly can provide some insight for me.
