“We’ve got players, I love our schemes, love the things that we’re doing but we’re not giving ourselves a chance,” Shaw said. “We’ve got to give ourselves a chance to be in these games in the fourth quarter and we’ll find a way to win. But right now we’re not giving ourselves a chance and that’s what has to change.”

Apparently, our strategy is not to dominate or try to jump out to an early lead, or to control the tempo of the game, etc., but to hang around until the fourth quarter and hope we get lucky? That’s some really brilliant scheming there; or maybe it’s a tacit admission of the reality of the limitations of our players, especially on D, since apparently we are only going to win games in the fourth quarter. Anyway, how do statements like this motivate players? Oh, I forgot, he’s on record as saying that’s not his job. In the same article he says that “if we can just avoid the catastrophic mistakes we can march the ball down the field and score some points and be effective.” Good thinking there, coach. Maybe some of the “schemes,” such as having a not very mobile pocket passer run a slow-to-develop RPO offense is leading to some of said catastrophes? Or maybe running telegraphed QB sneaks on long fourth and 1’s is part of the problem? Nah, just need to clean up a few things and “do what we do.”
