Stanford finished 9-4 with a 4-game win streak and is ranked NR (CFP), 30 (AP), and 32 (Coaches). We are 24 in Jeff Sagarin’s ranking, so that may be a proxy for us being around the 26-30 in CFP rankings.
To determine any potential upward movement, I looked at any team with 9 or fewer wins or ranked ahead of us and ranked below 20 in the CFP.
There is no way that we jump:
LSU (10-3, beat UCF, ranked 11 CFP, 11 AP, 11 Coaches)
Texas (10-4, beat GA, ranked 15 CFP, 14 AP, 14 Coaches)
UK (10-3, beat PSU, ranked 14 CFP, 16 AP, 15 Coaches)
We are unlikely to jump:
PSU (9-4, lost to UK, ranked 12 CFP, 13 AP, 12 Coaches)
TAMU (9-4, beat NC State , ranked 19 CFP, 21 AP, 20 Coaches)
Syracuse (10-3, beat WVU, ranked 20 CFP, 17 AP, 17 Coaches)
Fresno State (12-2, beat ASU, ranked 21 CFP, 19 AP, 21 Coaches)
We could jump:
WVU (8-4, lost to Syracuse, ranked 16 CFP, 15AP, 16 Coaches)
Utah (9-5, lost to NW, ranked 17 CFP, 20 AP, 19 Coaches)
Miss State (8-5, lost to Iowa, ranked 18 CFP, 18 AP, 18 Coaches)
NW (9-5, beat Utah, ranked 22 CFP, 26 AP, 22 Coaches)
Iowa (9-4, beat Miss St, ranked 31 Coaches)
We should jump:
Mizzou (8-5, lost to Ok St, ranked 23 CFP, 24 AP, 29 Coaches)
Iowa State (8-5, lost to WSU, ranked 24 CFP, 25 AP, 26 Coaches)
Boise St (10-3, DNP, ranked 25 CFP, 23 AP, 24 Coaches)
Army (11-2, beat Houston, ranked 22 AP, 26 Coaches)
Utah State (11-2 , beat NTU, ranked 27 AP, 23 Coaches)
NC State (9-4, Lost to TAMU, ranked 28 AP, 27 Coaches)
Cinci (11-2, beat V Tech, ranked 29 AP, 28 Coaches)
App State (11-2, beat MTU, ranked 30 Coaches)
I would guess that we end up 23-25 in at least one of the AP or Coaches final polls, with our ceiling at 20.
