Gonna start a new thread because the "eliminate 11 sports" thread has gotten too long and too convoluted.

I'll cut to the chase.

The notion that if the Athletic Department got it's act together they could fill the football stadium which in turn would solve all budgetary problems is not valid.

Let's talk about the easier part of this. Yes, Stanford has more money than God. But even God has bad days. I think Stanford has over reacted to the covid mess. We will be fine financially. And I cut them a lot of slack. None of us have had to deal with anything like this. It kinda makes sense to be overly cautious. Or, maybe, no one wants to be seen as insensitive to the pandemic.

Wear your mask, dammit, when you are playing singles tennis. Yeah, right.

Now, as to the butts in the seats part. I don't think we can do anything about that.

Well, we can do better but it won't make much of a difference.

We are lucky to have Jon Denny in charge of development. Back when we were raising money to rebuild the stadium, the Development Office actively opposed it. We won't have that attitude going forward.

The question is (sorry that it took me so long to get here) who are the butts?

Stanford grads? No. Hell, many current season ticket holders can't be bothered to show up if it is raining, colder than 50, hotter than 80, on a school night, we're playing Davis, and a hundred other reasons. Not to mention that there aren't a lot of them living within a 2 hours drive from the game. Cal and San Jose State must have 10 times the alums in the Bay Area that we do. How is their attendance doing?

Then who? I grant that we have not figured this out. And we can do better in that regard. But a lot of people who live in 650 and 408 think Stanford alums are arrogant jerks. I leave it to you to discuss whether or not this is accurate.

All that being said, I am disappointed that Muir doesn't take a more vocal role.
