Norm Chow has been fired by Hawaii. The only reason this is news for Stanford fans is because Duane Akina is probably near or at the top of the list of candidates for that moribund program.

I believe Akina wanted the job when Hawaii gave it to Chow. I'm going off memory saying that and could be wrong.

Now Akina's son is a senior in high school. Shaw can't promote him. And if Akina wants to finally have his shot at leading a program then it's unlikely money or new title would matter.

But does he want to be a head coach? In my opinion that's a legitimate question given his longstanding reputation as an excellent position coach. Has there really been no opportunity to take a top job somewhere? Or has he been waiting to go home?

Stanford fans have marveled at what we've called the “Akina effect" on defensive back recruiting. This could provide an interesting twist to this recruiting cycle. Assuming the worst and Akina leaves, it seems likely that it won't be long after that announcement that TJ Rushing is promoted.
