We've been able to reach a number of last weekend's key visitors (will have a few more stories up this week), but wanted to share a few comments on some that we haven't yet.
-In light of Dylan Crawford's successful visit to Stanford and the fact that it now does appear he is a viable option for the Cardinal, I think it's worth pointing out a few reasons why Stanford might be an appealing option for him.
-Dylan's older brother, Evan, plays basketball at Santa Clara. He'll be a freshman this season.
-I think the package deal concept/friendships within high school recruiting circles can be a bit overblown at times. But K.J. Costello and Dylan Crawford and their families are legitimately very close. Though they've never indicated (to my knowledge) plans to be a package deal in college. Plus, Dylan is friends with several Stanford commits. He goes way back with David Long and Treyjohn Butler and he's buddies with Curtis Robinson. Dylan transferred in to Santa Margarita after the 2014 football season so he never actually played with Austin Maihen, but they did attend SM together for a few months and obviously know each other.
-Comfort level is oftentimes a very important - I'd argue the most important - factor in a recruit's decision. The fact that his older brother would be nearby and he'd be in the same class as several close friends could give Stanford an edge in that category - Dylan won't have those type of connections with other programs involved in his recruitment, save potentially UCLA.
-Dylan is a very good student.
-Stanford has a significant need at the receiver position. I've heard that the plan is to sign two this year (excluding Simi, who will serve a mission before college), though they'd go to three for the right player. They signed three last year (including Jabiari Tyler, who might be more of an athlete), none in 2014 and one in 2013. So the depth chart would be extremely favorable.
-At this point I'm honestly not sure where Dylan will go. I don't know that he necessarily knows, either. And I'm not sure which factors he'll consider when making his choice. But there are a number of reasons why Stanford makes sense. So we'll see how this ends up playing out. Regardless, you feel better today about Stanford's 2016 WR prospects than a few months ago before the Donald Stewart offer and before Crawford's most recent visit.
-2016 Palma quarterback Jack Richardson does not have nearly the same recruiting profile that Dylan does (and he'd be a walk-on candidate for Stanford), but his recruitment is interesting for a different reason. His father, Kevin, played linebacker for Stanford from 1984-1988. Jack's mother, Teresa, played volleyball for the Cardinal during those same years and was inducted into the school's sports Hall of Fame in 2003. Richardson camped with Stanford this summer and is a guy to keep tabs on as a potential walk-on QB in this class.
-Because I know some have asked: I did a bit of digging and I did not receive a concrete number for tight ends Stanford plans to take in 2017. Best guess per one source is that it will end up being two, but it's still somewhat fluid.
