I still want to get to a number of additional 2016 recruiting items before totally moving coverage on to the 2017 class, but figured it would be a good idea to kind of summarize the current standing of Stanford's 2017 recruiting efforts now. I haven't really chatted with many 2017 targets within the past month or so, and there were a few more '17 offers extended this week, but hopefully this gives folks a bit of a general overview, even if it doesn't reflect all of the very latest developments.
Stanford will host its first Junior Day of the 2017 cycle later this month, so that will kind of be the next major event in 2017 recruiting. And I'll start making calls and gathering additional information on the 2017 class soon.
And I don't currently have the information, but at some point I'll hopefully be able to provide a rough estimate on desired numbers for each position (and total numbers for the class).
ICYMI: 2017 Offensive review
Defensive line
For the first time since the 2013 class, defensive line is not a pressing need for the Cardinal. Stanford has signed eight defensive linemen over the past three recruiting cycles (plus Eric Cotton moved to the defensive line), so they should be OK shape numbers wise. Nonetheless, the Cardinal has offered several defensive linemen, and they're in good shape with a few.
Three-star New Jersey defensive tackle Dalyn Wade-Perry has offers from pretty much everyone, but Stanford is very high on his list - they were a dream offer of sorts for him. Wade-Perry is planning to visit The Farm this spring.
Four-star Alabama DL Ryan Johnson scored a 24 on his first stab at the ACT (without studying), and reported a strong first term in the classroom.
Four-star SoCal DL Martin Andrus has Stanford reasonably high on list, though I'd imagine the Los Angeles schools will provide stiff competition.
It's my understanding that Stanford has offered four-star Pittsburgh OL/DL C.J. Thorpe as a defensive lineman.

Linebacker
Stanford doesn't currently have any 2017 LB commits, but they are expected to welcome 2015 signee Gabe Reid back into the program. Reid projects as an outside linebacker in the Cardinal's defense.
After signing four scholarship linebackers in 2014/2015, the Cardinal didn't add any inside linebackers in 2016. They only lose one after the 2016 season, Noor Davis (though Kevin Palma would be a fifth year player), but it would be somewhat surprising to see the program go two straight years without addressing the position.
At outside linebacker, Southern California standout Jaelan Phillips was very positive in the initial aftermath of receiving a Cardinal scholarship offer, and he's a strong candidate to attend a Junior Day this spring.
Baron Browning of course has the very strong family connection to Stanford (older brother Barry played cornerback), and his Baylor verbal commitment is thought to be somewhat shaky. However, he didn't have the Cardinal in his top three prior to committing to the Bears, so it might take some work there. I think if you're Stanford you hope that the existing relationships (both through his brother and even with someone like Mike Williams, who's a good friend) convince him to take a second look.
Georgia OLB Leonard Warner has Stanford in his top five - the Cardinal has made a push there - and he is someone I've heard described as potentially a very good fit. Of course Chidi Okonya and Tre Lamar were good fits in the 2016 class, and neither made it to campus. So I suppose we'll see if that happens with Leonard.
Santino Marchiol, who is from Colorado, is someone I thought Stanford would be in the game with, but the move to IMG does give one a bit of pause.
Nate McBride will be a tough pull from the SEC, but here's what he said when we talked in September.
I think David Adams will likely stay closer to home.
Stanford made Anthony Hines' top 20.
