Stanford opened spring practice today - a few notes to pass along. (The first open practice will be this Saturday morning from 9:30 - 11:50.)
-As we previously mentioned, Ronnie Harris and Aziz Shittu will be out for spring with injuries. Shaw reiterated that Aziz would be close to being ready to go in the second session, but there's no need to push it. Somewhat humorously, right as Shaw mentioned that Aziz would be out for spring, Aziz came jogging by the media huddle at a pretty rapid pace, and with no noticeable limp.
-Patrick Skov is expected to miss the first session of spring ball (but he should be healthy for the second) with a knee injury.
-Jesse Burkett has been dealing with a "minor illness" per Shaw and will probably be held out of the first session, though he's expected to be healthy enough to return to the field in some capacity in the next few days.
-Kevin Anderson will be limited this spring with what Shaw described as some sort of hand injury. He'll be in pads and will do some individual work, but no team drills.
-Brendon Austin is banged up, Shaw said, but not timeline for a return was provided. I will follow up on Saturday.
-Kyle Murphy is now working at left tackle, as expected. Nick Davidson, Casey Tucker and Dave Bright (after Burkett returns) will be the guys at right tackle.
-Johnny Caspers is working some at center in Burkett's absence. As a result, Dave Bright and Brandon Fanaika are the main guys in the mix at right guard for the time being. That will change when Austin gets cleared to play and when Burkett returns, which will push Caspers back to right guard.
-Luke Kaumatule is doing a little bit of everything, Shaw said - some OLB, some DE in nickel.
-Kevin Hogan is obviously getting the majority of the first-team reps and is locked in as the No. 1 QB, but Ryan Burns and Keller Chryst are also getting a ton of opportunities, even a few with the first group; Shaw said each of the three signal callers will work with the first during Saturday's scrimmage. The competition for that No. 2 spot will probably continue on into training camp, Shaw said.
