Basketball Tyrell Terry open to returning to Stanford

Sports Illustrated (not their Stanford affiliate site) did a nice piece on Tyrell Terry and just the challenges he had in the NBA from a mental health standpoint. Clearly a guy who left college too soon. One interesting tidbit was that he said he's open to returning to Stanford and finishing his degree. That actually sounds like what he's hoping/planning to do. Philosophy is something he might study.

If that happens, I'll definitely see if I can run him down and do a story on him. Hopefully it all works out for him.

Jason Garrett On Dan Patrick Show

FWIW…Jason Garrett said the following on the Dan Patrick Show with regards to why he decided to pass on Stanford:

"It's an intriguing place," Garrett told Patrick. "I've always had great admiration for (Stanford). That's why I went out there and visited with them, to get a chance to talk with Andrew Luck, Condoleezza Rice, Bruce Dunlevie and Bernard Muir ... It was a really fun experience and stimulating experience. But at the end of it, the college landscape is changing. You embrace the standards at a place like Stanford. You want to coach those kinds of kids who are so driven. But with the transfer portal, NIL and other factors, it might be hard to win in an environment like that. I was grateful for the opportunity, but I am glad I did what I did."

Most talented Stanford teams ever

Because it's been awhile since I've done a research project, I indulged a question in my mind: what are the most talented Stanford teams of all time? Using NFL performance as a heuristic for how talented players are, I present to you Stanford football teams 1968-2015 (I figure the more recent we get the more to-be-written the NFL accomplishments of those teams are) as ranked by total Weighted Career Approximate Value among players who played that season (parentheticals: total wCAV/number of wCAV-registering players after each team, individual wCAV for each player):

2014 and 2015 will rise but won't reach the top tier.

Observations:

* Quite obvious 2010-2011 was the high point. 23 contributing NFL players! Kind of obvious considering those were the best teams in our history. I put Luck up against any player in college history but wow what a supporting cast. No doubt in my mind he had a far superior supporting cast to Hogan, Plunkett, or Elway.

* 1990-1991 really stand out as well. I continue to think Denny Green is the most overrated person to ever be associated with Stanford football. Jack Elway left an incredible cupboard (see 1989) and by the time those players were veterans of course Green's teams played well. And then Green left Walsh II a roster poised to go off a cliff after a year.

* The team Harris inherited from Teevens is unspeakable. Shocking. Similarly, Wiggin did Elway no favors.

* The historical norm is for a given roster to have about 8-10 guys play who go on to have contributing NFL careers. It feels to me like Taylor is inheriting a lowly roster by our standards but we'll see.

Would love to hear others' thoughts on this data and/or other impressions of Stanford's most/least talented teams.

Men's Gymnastics

As expected, Stanford handled Cal today. I forgot to watch the meet (it was on closed circuit video). Briones competed in 2 events. Malone did not - as expected. 410 was a pretty good score for a first meet, considering how awful the team was on pommel. A long way to go until NCAA's. I expect the team score to be around 425 by then.

Addendum: Watching the video now. Asher Hong fell off the pommel twice. And his form was awful when he was on there. I know one of the judges who was on pommel tonight. I'm sure I'll hear about it.

WBB Utah stats

Well, what immediately comes to your attention is Brink 9-12 FG, 1-1 3s, 6-7 FT, 14 rebs and Jones 10-17 FG, 0-0 3s, 5-6FTs, and 12 rebs. Super stars.

I particularly like that they only shot one 3.

But we already knew they were awesome.

What about everyone else? Lepolo getting injured throws a wrench into the gears.

But, wow, Iriafin, 1 minute? 1 minute??? Demetre, 2 minutes? Prechetel 10 minutes? Down arrow for all of them and up arrow for Belibi.

Of course, my choice for the other big is Betts, who got zero minutes.

Jump played 40 minutes. 1 reb, 1 asst.

Nivar and Emma-Nnopu lines were not good but I thought they both did well.

Do I have a point? Yeah, I find it odd in the extreme that we don't have a settled starting 5 this late in the season.
