On why Stanford made his top seven: "I would say just first the relationship I’ve built with the coaching staff and second, the education. I would say just the amount of opportunities that can be presented to you after you graduate from Stanford. It’s automatic attention and the eyes on you when you come out of Stanford. Those are the two reasons why."

On his relationship with Bobby April and the defensive staff: "We have a great relationship because he was at Wisconsin before. They offered me when they were still at Wisconsin and then we kept it going when they came to Stanford. Our relationship never changed. I thought it got better after the transition to Stanford."

On playing on the West Coast in California coming from Michigan: "Oh yeah, for sure. Being in California. It’s a state I’ve never been to before. Just the weather and everything else about it. It would be amazing."

On what areas of his game he's most focusing on: "I would say probably my blitzing off the edge and my coverage skills. Just putting myself in positions to cover more. Guard the slot man and cover the running back more and my blitzing both on the inside and the outside. Create more sacks."

On what he most enjoys about being an inside linebacker: "Yessir, I just like being able to be the leader of the defense. Be that somebody that people can lean on. I also like being that tone setter and someone who puts fear into the opponent on the first snap."

Read that here. It was just me asking questions to Haase and Spencer Jones while Pac-12 Networks rolled the tape. That was kinda fun. I also talked to Michael O'Connell after the game as well. I thought he deserved some love after the way he played.

I should probably clarify that it's best if we can keep political comments/jokes or comments/jokes that can be perceived as political out of threads that are dedicated to a specific sport/Stanford athletic topic.

There are some who don't want to see political stuff in threads like this, which I think is fair. Everything is cool. Just a friendly reminder.

And also to avoid further confusion, I'm way more lax about such comments if they are in threads that are of the off topic variety. Just because those threads are well, off topic. But any thread that is Stanford sports related doesn't need politics injected into it.

Two players with health concerns answered some questions.

Two players who impressed all week are Tulane running back Tyjae Spears and Stanford wide receiver Michael Wilson. Spears, who played around 190 pounds, tipped the scales in Mobile at 204 pounds and showcased his typical suddenness without any loss of speed. Wilson has the size and body control of a possession receiver in the NFL, and he demonstrated the array of routes and quickness necessary to become a trustworthy third-down target.

I have included them together because of the medical concerns with each. Spears, who had a dominant and healthy season in 2022, tore his ACL in 2020, and scouts are concerned about the long-term health of his knee. Wilson was a relative unknown entering the week because he has only played 14 games total over the last three seasons due to COVID-related schedule disruptions and a foot injury that lingered for almost a year. Both checked a big box this week with their performances, but bigger boxes—the medical tests at the combine—remain."

D1 just published their writeup on the conference. I will not go into detail because it is behind the paywall, but a few cool things:

• They pick Stanford to win the conference (no surprise)
• They think Braden Montgomery will win Pac12 player of the year, and Quinn Matthews will win pitcher of the year
• They think Tommy Troy is the top draft prospect in the conference
• They pick Malcom Moore as the #2 freshman in Pac12

There's a couple of articles from Adam Gorney about National Signing Day that touch on Stanford a bit. Figured I would just put both of them in one thread since Stanford is only talked about a bit in both. Mainly about the guys they lost, unfortunately.

The only thing I would add is this focused exclusively on high school additions. If you include the two offensive linemen Alec Bank and Trevor Mayberry who Stanford added, I definitely wouldn't call them a loser for the day. Maybe not a winner, either because they weren't able to keep some good freshmen. But, adding Bank and Mayberry was significant. And then one of the PWOs they got at wide receiver Myles Libman has a chance to be a real steal. This is all to say National Signing Day wasn't all bad for the Cardinal.

I thought I'd give the press conference video its own thread. Taylor says more about the recruiting performance and abilities of his assistants in this video than Shaw did his entire time here. He even suggests that recruiting ability factored into why certain coaches were great additions! I don't think Shaw ever brought that up. I honestly don't mean to start a Shaw-bashing thread, but it just felt newsworthy that I heard Stanford's football coach talk about recruiting like, well, everyone else.

It's not a surprise but nice to hear him say that Stanford isn't done recruiting for 2023 and will look to add more transfers.

Some posts from the official Instagram and Twitter accounts. Obviously not a ton of new information gleaned from this, but a couple notables:

• Bailey and Cooper are both back. This is notable because Bailey in particular was being tampered with HEAVILY to enter the portal by USC among others.
• Bryce Farrell is still training with the team. As it turns out, he was able to redshirt this past season and now technically has 3 years of eligibility left entering his academic senior year. This may be an interesting one to watch in terms of 5th year retention, and I'm sure he'll be used plenty in the new system.
• Gaethan Bernadel is pictured training with the team. We knew that, but still cool to see it official.
• The real interesting tidbit here is in the 2nd picture of the Twitter post (all the players in a half-squat). I'm pretty sure the player on the far left of that picture is Zahran Manley. That would be great news.
